Scope:

The scope of the course is to provide theoretical and practical training in safe mooring operation according to STCW Code.

The course covers: types of mooring, general characteristics of mooring lines, safe mooring practice, mooring procedures, mooring layout, mooring arrangements, operation of mooring winches and windlass, planning and organization of mooring operation, maintenance of mooring equipment, UHF, VHF type of communication between Bridge & All Mooring stations, commands for mooring operations, usage of heaving line and different types of stoppers, communication and the mandatory signals to be used in mooring operation, anchoring procedures, commands for anchorage.

Learning objectives:

  1. Identify the typical mooring arrangement.
  2. Understand the strength/strain criteria of synthetic fiber and wire ropes used in mooring operation.
  3. Explain and identify snap back and snap back zones.
  4. Operate mooring winches and windlass.
  5. Work with mooring winches and windlass with and without load.
  6. Execute a safe mooring operation.
  7. Explain the working principles of mooring winches and anchor winches.
  8. Know and practice the proper handling of mooring lines.
  9. Stopping and belaying of synthetic fiber and wire ropes.
  10. Working with fire wire and tug wire.
  11. Principle planning and organization of mooring and anchorage operations.
  12. Execute the correct hand signals necessary for mooring operations.
  13. Understand the purpose of risk assessment and job hazards for mooring operations.

Target group:

Prospective Officers Deck and Engine Department ; Deck and Engine Ratings.

Duration:

3 Days. The course is a full 3 days programme and attendance for the whole duration of the course is essential in order to be deemed competent.

Time:
Course will start at 0900 every day. Two coffee breaks and one lunch break at 1.00 p.m. (lunch and refreshments are included in the course fee). Please arrive in good time for your training course and allow extra 10 minutes for check-in on the first day. Late arrival will cause inconvenience for others.

Location:
KMSTC, (Kherson State Maritime Academy – 20, Ushakova av. Kherson, Ukraine) Delegates will be met at the entrance and escorted to the class room.

Drug and alcohol policy:
Alcohol cannot be consumed on KMSTC premises. In the opinion of management, if a participant is under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol, then management shall remove that person from KMSTC premises. Notification to the person’s employer may be made if the employer paid for the course.

Hotel:
Optional. KMSTC management may assist you in booking a hotel. (Hotel fees will be covered by participants)

Items to Bring:
Form of Valid Government Issued identification, with photograph (passport / driving License / Government Card etc).

Special Requirements:
Please inform us if you require any special requirements for your training with us here at KMSTC, for example (physical, religious, dietary requirements) we will assist where necessary.
You may do so by contacting KMSTC by email, phone or calling in prior to training, your requests will be treated in confidence.

Assessments: 
Participants will demonstrate/explain/identify their level of knowledge, skills and understanding through oral and/or written questioning and practical activities by our qualified facilitators.

Complaints and Appeals:
All trainees who find themselves deemed ”Not Yet Competent” have the right to appeal that decision. All appeals shall be directed, in writing, to the Administrator who will support your appeal process. Where participants believe that they have been treated unfairly, unruly or unjust by any member of staff whilst attending a KMSTC run course, or whilst having contact with KMSTC, they should express their concerns in writing with assistance from the administrator.

Cancellations and refunds:
KMSTC will safeguard fees paid by customers in advance. Customers who have paid in advance for training will be entitled to a full refund in the event of withdrawing five working days prior to training.
