Marine Automation and Control Systems Training – 7760 UAH


This program has been specifically developed to fill the practical electrical and electronic knowledge gap that has traditionally been a weak area for most marine engineers. This training provides students with the knowledge and skills to plan manage and carry out control engineering operations, maintenance and repairs on signal sensing and measuring devices, transducers, electrical motor control devices, controllers and final controlling elements on commercial vessels. This includes the design, operational principles, construction, safety, statutory requirements, trouble shooting, testing and measurements, repairs and maintenance to enable safe and efficient operation of the open and closed loop control systems. It is designed to maximize the practical aspects of the work carried out on board ships with the use of appropriate laboratory equipment and exercises.

Covering advanced aspects of shipboard electrical knowledge, this workshop, conducted in a dedicated laboratory, provides theoretical information and intensive hands-on training. The training covers principles of process control, Automation, Marine control systems, electrical safety procedures, theory and application of electricity, electrical machines, types of conductors and insulators, troubleshooting and testing of electrical and electronics components and devices. A written evaluation and skills based assessment of trainee’s performance through appropriate practical laboratory exercises is provided at the end of the training session.

After the training, the participants shall be able to:

  • Explain the principles of automation and practical application onboard.
  • Describe the basic principles of measurements and application on board.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot typical marine control systems.
  • Apply electrical safety procedures.
  • Demonstrate safety procedures in using electrical measuring instruments.
  • Identify and explain the functions of different electrical / electronic parameters
  • Identify different electrical / electronic components, symbols and diagrams as per ANSI / DIN standard.
  • Interpret different types of electrical circuits.
  • Identify various types of electrical control devices and circuit protection.
  • Understand the construction, operation and application of motors, generators and transformers.
  • Assemble, disassemble and to understand the proper connection of motors.
  • Enhance the understanding of the basic principles and operation of electrical motor control.
  • Provide familiarization with the different type of control devices used  in motor control
    • Identify and interpret different types of electrical diagrams, symbols and specifications
    • Explain the application and difference between the Full Voltage Starting and the Reduced Voltage Starting.
    • Describe, construct and discuss the principles and operations of different types of motor starter’s circuits and their protections.
    • Improve the ability in maintaining and fault finding electrical equipment on board ships that provides safe and efficient operation.
    • Explain and implement programs using timer and counter functions.

    Implement sequential control and troubleshooting.

Certification: A Certificate of Completion shall be issued to a participant who has successfully completed the course.
